Subject:"Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)"
The GAR was a fraternal organization concerned with honoring those who served in the military for the Union, especially those who died, also offering aid to soldiers in financial need and helping soldiers' widows and orphans. At its height in 1890, the GAR had a membership of over 400,000. The last member died in 1956, but the remaining records can answer numerous questions about your Civil War ancestors and their families.
