Subject:"Picture This"
One hundred years of photography from Civil War era, Antebellum and Victoriana to the mid-20th century. Dating old photos from clothing, hair styles and furniture; a comparison of reality and reproductions.

Speaker: Violet Carr Moore
Livermore, CA

Violet Carr Moore is an author and co-founder of Carr Twins & Co. independent publishing. She is Vice President of California Writers Club, Tri-Valley Branch. She has participated in how-to group workshops on self-publishing memoirs and family stories. She is an inspirational speaker and devotional writer. Her most recent story has been included in Christmas Miracles, an anthology published by St. Martin's Press. Before concentrating on writing, she enjoyed historical Civil War reenacting for several years as a sutler, a purveyor of goods. In modern terms, a sutler in the mid-nineteenth century was a merchant who sold goods to military troops. A sutler also provided domestic goods to families in the area. Ms. Moore's sutlery experience was anchored as a seamstress, creating authentic-style costumes for genteel ladies. From the unmentionables of pantalets, chemises, stockings, and garters to the obvious day dresses, capes and ballgowns, those authentic-style reproductions prompted much research. Original photographs became one of her main sources for authenticity. Ms. Moore has traced genealogy for family and others through the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century beginning with the Civil War period and extending one hundred years later in Happy Days of the 1950s. From this research, she has gleaned knowledge to identify photography time periods. She will speak about clothing and background that will help you determine the time frame of undated photos and shares some secrets that separate reproductions from reality.
